It was 1988 and Robynn MacFarlane was 17 years old when she walked through the door at Champagne & Lace. This was her first day of work, and never in her wildest dreams, could she imagine the passion, love and loyalty that would grow in her for C & L.
That day, Robynn was excited, and a little nervous. Her boss, Gerri Charles, was a lady with very particular standards, for the bridal shop she’d opened two years earlier in beautiful Downtown Abbotsford. Each new dress that arrived was to be unpacked with care, pressed to remove any wrinkles, and hung according to style and size. Each customer who came through the door was to be welcomed, treated with the utmost respect and dignity, and catered to personally until the perfect outfit was selected. Robynn loved it!
Twenty-five years later, Gerri confided in Robynn with some emotional news. Gerri was going to retire. Robynn broke down in tears. Did this mean the store would be closed? What would happen to her work family? Would she ever have another chance to get Cinderella ready for the ball?
She loved seeing women transformed. Seeing the look of confidence on a shy girl’s face when she twirled in the mirror. Watching a young bride-to-be try on dress after dress after dress, and then seeing that look of pure joy when she finally discovered “the one.”
When Robynn spoke to her family, they all agreed that she should become the new owner of C & L. And she did.
Some things have changed over the years, and some things are just the same. All of the staff, many of whom have been a huge part of C & L for numerous years, still get excited when a new shipment arrives. So much so, that whoever is working that day sends photos to the rest of the staff. They don’t sell shoes anymore, but they do have the Pink Room – a selection of both informal and formal pieces at bargain prices. They don’t sell dresses for flower girls, but they cater to the Curvalicious. Of course, they still have the most beautiful bridal wear, prom dresses, gala-glam and evening wear.
And whether you are young or not so young, tall or not so tall, with a budget of babysitting money or an exclusive black credit card, when you walk through that door, you will be welcomed, treated with respect and dignity, and catered to personally until the perfect outfit is selected; because at Champagne & Lace, you are never just a customer, you are a guest.
